In June 2025, a tour group carrying Chinese tourists from across China and France departed from the Place d'Italie in Paris, bound for the European tourist mecca of Spain and Portugal. Led by a tour guide named Ye, they began a ten-day cultural tour of Spain and Portugal.
Team Leader Ye was particularly welcoming upon meeting his relatives from his home country, and the others felt particularly at ease meeting their guide, who was overseas.
Team Leader Ye told everyone that he preferred to be addressed as "Team Leader," though everyone still preferred to call him "Guide Ye."
With nearly twenty years of experience, Guide Ye possessed a wealth of knowledge. From European history and culture to renowned mountains and rivers, from street sculptures to exquisite paintings, Guide Ye meticulously introduced every visitor to Spain and Portugal. While it's difficult to remember the family dynamics of King Philip of Spain, or to grasp the love-hate dynamics of Portugal's Burgundian dynasty, Guide Ye's eloquent and moving commentary helped us capture the crucial role of castles, churches, and the rise of equality, fraternity, and freedom in Europe.
Not only did Guide Ye's commentary throughout the trip flow brilliantly, but at each hotel, he also acted as a steward, taking care of all matters, from the smallest details. He explained how to choose the right floor for the elderly, how to get the most economical meals, and how to connect the elderly with their wives. He even instructed them on simple matters like getting off the bus to urinate. His meticulous attention to detail allowed many elderly people without children to truly experience the warmth of family.
It wasn't until the end of the tour that the group realized that Guide Ye was not only a versatile "leader" but also a competent "tour guide." More precisely, he was the "leader" of this ten-day "Two Spains" trip. The Romanian driver remained silent throughout the trip (he spoke no Chinese), but his smiles while waiting for everyone to board and his steady driving made him a memorable memory for every traveler.
Back in Paris, amidst a traffic jam, someone on the bus suggested a chorus of "My Motherland and I" to express the Chinese tourists' gratitude to Guide Ye and the driver.
The singing, applause, and laughter made this reunion in a foreign land truly unforgettable.
