Introduction to Rovaniemi
Rovaniemi is the administrative capital and the largest city of Lapland, Finland. With a population of over 60,000, it serves as the primary gateway to the Finnish Arctic. The city is uniquely situated at the confluence of two major rivers, the Kemijoki and the Ounasjoki, and its history is deeply intertwined with the wilderness that surrounds it. Tragically, during the Lapland War in 1944, the city was almost completely destroyed by retreating German forces. Its rebirth was masterminded by the famous Finnish architect Alvar Aalto, who designed the city plan in the shape of a reindeer’s head. Today, Rovaniemi is a modern hub of education, science, and tourism, famously known as the Official Hometown of Santa Claus®.
Best Time to Visit Rovaniemi
The experience in Rovaniemi varies dramatically with the seasons, each offering a distinct set of attractions.
Winter (December – March)
This is the peak tourist season, characterized by snow-covered landscapes and the Polar Night (Kaamos). From early December to mid-January, the sun does not rise above the horizon, resulting in a period of twilight-like light for a few hours a day. This is the prime time for:
- Christmas and New Year celebrations at Santa Claus Village.
- Viewing the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) in the dark, clear skies.
- Snow-based activities like husky and reindeer safaris, snowmobiling, and skiing.
- Average temperatures range from -10°C to -20°C (14°F to -4°F), but can drop lower.
Spring (April – May)
A beautiful transitional period. The snow is still abundant in April, but the days are much longer and brighter. The sun returns with vigor, and by May, the snow begins to melt. This is an excellent time for winter activities without the extreme cold and darkness of mid-winter.
Summer (June – August)
Experience the phenomenon of the Midnight Sun. From June to early July, the sun does not set at all for about a month. This period offers 24 hours of daylight, perfect for:
- Hiking, fishing, and canoeing.
- Experiencing local festivals and open-air events.
- Visiting attractions in perpetual daylight.
- Temperatures are mild, typically between 10°C and 20°C (50°F – 68°F).
Autumn (September – November)
A period of stunning colors known as “Ruska.” The forest foliage turns vibrant shades of red, yellow, and orange. The nights become dark enough again for Northern Lights viewing from late August onwards. This is a quieter season, ideal for peaceful nature walks and photography before the winter snow arrives.
Getting There and Around
By Air
Rovaniemi Airport (RVN) is the primary airport in Lapland, located about 10 km north of the city center. It has regular flights from Helsinki (1.5 hours) operated by Finnair and NORRA. During the peak winter season, there are also direct charter flights from various European cities. A taxi or bus (Line 8) can take you from the airport to the city center or Santa Claus Village.
By Train
The overnight train from Helsinki to Rovaniemi is a classic and comfortable way to travel. The journey takes approximately 8-12 hours. Trains offer sleeping compartments, making it an efficient use of time. The Rovaniemi railway station is centrally located.
By Bus
Long-distance buses connect Rovaniemi with other cities in Finland, including Helsinki, Oulu, and Tornio. This is often the most economical option.
Getting Around
Local Buses: The city has a reliable local bus network that connects the city center with suburbs, the airport, and Santa Claus Village.
Taxis: Readily available but can be expensive. Pre-booking is recommended during peak season.
Car Rental: A popular option for those wanting to explore the wider Lapland region at their own pace. Major rental companies have offices at the airport and in the city. Note: Winter driving requires caution and familiarity with icy conditions.
Bicycle: A great way to explore the city in summer, with dedicated bike paths available.

Meet Santa Claus
At the heart of the village is the Santa Claus Office, where you can meet Santa himself every day of the year. The meeting is free, but professional photos and videos are available for purchase.
Cross the Arctic Circle
A prominent white line marks the Arctic Circle (66° 33′ 39″ N) running through the village. You can officially cross it and receive a certificate to commemorate the event.
Santa Claus Main Post Office
This magical post office handles hundreds of thousands of letters sent to Santa from children all over the world. You can send postcards with a special Arctic Circle postmark or set a delivery date for a letter to arrive just in time for Christmas.

Husky Park: Meet friendly huskies and learn about sled dog life.

Arktikum
A magnificent museum and science center housed in a stunning glass tunnel building. Arktikum offers deep insights into Arctic nature, Northern Lights science, and the history and culture of the Sámi people. Its permanent exhibition, “Northern Ways,” is particularly comprehensive.
Pilke Science Centre
Located in the same building as Arktikum, Pilke offers a hands-on experience focused on sustainable forestry and the importance of forests in Finland. It’s highly interactive and great for families.
Korundi House of Culture
This contemporary art museum is housed in a renovated 1930s post office bus depot. It features changing exhibitions of modern art and is home to the Rovaniemi Chamber Orchestra.
Ounasvaara Fell
A popular outdoor recreation area located just a few kilometers from the city center. In winter, it offers alpine skiing, snowboarding, and cross-country skiing trails. In summer, it’s perfect for hiking, mountain biking, and at its summit, you’ll find “Sky Ounasva,” a viewing tower offering panoramic views of Rovaniemi and the surrounding wilderness.
