Ireland’s remarkable train journeys

Picture a stunning blend of mountains, lush green fields, and dramatic sea cliffs, paired with historic landmarks and picturesque hiking trails. This is what makes railway journeys across the island of Ireland truly exceptional.

First on the list is the route dubbed by Lonely Planet as one of Europe’s Top Train Journeys. The DART, Dublin’s commuter train, runs alongside Dublin Bay, providing breathtaking coastal vistas. When you head south, make a stop at Dún Laoghaire to spot grey seals while walking the 1.3 km East Pier that juts out into the Irish Sea. Continue your journey towards Bray, where you’ll be treated to stunning ocean views. Alternatively, if you travel north to the charming village of Howth, you can enjoy the spectacular Cliff Path that winds along a striking peninsula.

Moving on to County Waterford, you’ll find the 12 km Waterford Suir Valley Railway, which was revitalized through a community heritage initiative. Board a vintage train carriage at Kilmeaden Station and take in the scenic views as you glide past fields and alongside the River Suir. Keep an eye out for Mount Congreve Gardens, renowned as one of the “Great Gardens of the World”!
