Nautical Decorations in Greece

The sea is an integral part of Greek life, so it’s no wonder that one of their unique Christmas traditions involves a boat. For centuries, the karavaki, or Christmas boat, served as an alternative to the traditional Christmas tree. Instead of decorating a fragrant fir, Greeks would adorn their boats with ornaments and, in more recent years, lights. Some believe the karavaki symbolized a family’s hope for the safety of their fishermen, husbands, and sons navigating the unpredictable waters. Others see it as a tribute to Saint Nicholas. Regardless of its origin, this practice offers a distinctive way to celebrate the year’s end. While the karavaki has become less common in recent years, there has been a resurgence of this charming tradition. If you’re fortunate enough to spend the holidays in Greece, be sure to look for one—tall masts and large sails adorned with twinkling lights create a truly magical sight!
