The National Marine Park of Alonnisos

The National Marine Park of Alonnisos is the first of Greece’s two National Marine Parks and is among Europe’s largest protected marine areas, covering approximately 2,260 square kilometers. In addition to the marine environment, the park encompasses a diverse group of islands: Alonnisos, six smaller islands (Peristéra, Kyrá Panayiá, Psathoúra, Pipéri, Skántzoura, and Yioúra), and 22 minor islets. The numerous coastal caves create a perfect habitat for the endangered Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus), allowing it to rest, breed, and thrive. The area’s geographical seclusion, Mediterranean climate, unique landscape, and minimal human disturbance contribute to its status as an excellent habitat for various rare species of flora and fauna.
