Festival Traditions and Celebrations

Carnival celebrations in Greece provide a wonderful opportunity for communities to come together and partake in traditional festivities.

One of the most renowned events is the Patras Carnival, held in Patras, North Peloponnese, attracting visitors from across Greece and beyond. The entire town embraces the festivities, which include the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, a Treasure Hunt, the Night Parade, the Grand Parade, and a special Carnival dedicated to children, among many other events.

In the northern region of Thrace, the town of Xanthi hosts the Xanthiotiko Carnival—a vibrant celebration of Thracian folk art. This event draws an audience from various places and features folk art performances, dancing, visual art exhibitions, concerts by popular Greek musicians, and plenty of traditional local cuisine. A highlight is the Children’s Parade, a delightful procession for schoolchildren, while the Grand Parade occurs on the final Sunday of Carnival, complete with colorful masks, street dancing, and all-day merrymaking. Smaller towns throughout Greece also celebrate with their own unique Carnival traditions and observances.
