As the only Grand Duchy in the world, Luxembourg uniquely boasts a Grand Ducal Palace. This royal residence opens its doors to the public for a few weeks each summer, allowing guests to explore the opulent interiors of this historic site. Visitors can ascend the grand staircase, enter the Grand Duke’s office, view the venue for state banquets, and appreciate the exquisite artwork on display.
Located in the heart of the city, the Grand Ducal Palace symbolizes Luxembourg’s unity and stability. Its ornate stone facade is gracefully situated among the bustling pedestrian streets near rue des Marchés-aux-Herbes. Originally constructed in the 16th century as a city hall, the palace has undergone several transformations throughout its history. Today, it showcases some of the finest examples of Flemish Renaissance architecture in the country.
Since 1890, this building has served as the residence for Luxembourg’s dukes and duchesses. However, during the Nazi occupation in World War II, it was repurposed as a beer and concert hall, resulting in the loss of much of its original art and furnishings. Grand Duchess Charlotte oversaw a redecoration of the palace in 1960, but a complete renovation was only achieved in the 1990s.
