Are you interested in visiting one of Europe’s major pilgrimage destinations? Or perhaps you’d like to uncover a former smuggler’s hideout from the communist era or explore industrial sites that seem to belong in a Jules Verne novel? If so, Czechia is the place for you. Discover its cultural routes, featuring hundreds of well-marked hiking and cycling paths. Many of these trails lead you off the beaten path, allowing you to enjoy your adventure away from the crowds while supporting sustainable tourism.
Pilgrimage Trails
The Cyril and Methodius Route, which stretches for thousands of kilometers across Europe, passes through Czechia, a central Slavic nation. This route commemorates the significant historical and cultural influence of Saints Cyril and Methodius, who are celebrated as the Apostles to the Slavs.
In Czechia, you can choose from several trails, including a long-distance hike that connects two UNESCO World Heritage sites. This 113-kilometer trek begins at Svatý Kopeček, a grand baroque pilgrimage complex near Olomouc, which is also a UNESCO-listed historic town. From there, the journey leads you to the picturesque ponds and chateau in Tovačov, and onward to the gardens and chateau in Kroměříž, another UNESCO gem. A highlight of this pilgrimage is the Basilica of Velehrad, a significant site for pilgrims, where beatified Pope John Paul II made his inaugural trip as pontiff.
Cycling the Iron Curtain Trail
For an exhilarating experience, spend two weeks cycling the Iron Curtain Trail, an 800-kilometer route along the borders with Germany and Austria. This trail offers breathtaking scenery and access to museums and Cold War landmarks. Much of the path follows the former military road, known as the signal road, established during the 1950s and 1960s along the communist border. Cyclists can choose from routes suitable for both seasoned bikers and families.
Along the way, you can visit the Museum of the Iron Curtain near the Rozvadov border crossing, explore the enchanting Šumava National Park, known for its history of smuggling, traverse the rugged landscape of Czech Canada, and view pre-war fortress fortifications near the Renaissance town of Slavonice.
Uncovering Industrial Heritage
