Exploring the Jura Region: Switzerland and France

While the Alps are widely known, have you ever considered the Jura region? This beautiful arc of hills features lush landscapes, stunning gorges, and some of the best hiking and fishing opportunities in Europe. Like many of Europe’s captivating areas, it spans a border and is steeped in history. I personally prefer the Swiss side of the Jura for its superior public transport options; however, a complete experience in the Jura should include cross-border adventures into France by train, bike, or on foot.

The Jura region has its share of surprises. In the 18th century, it became a significant center for European watchmaking. For many local farmers, watchmaking initially served as a winter pastime to supplement summer agricultural activities. They quickly realized the profitable potential of the industry. The Swiss Jura also became a lively center for political thought, with watchmakers participating in discussions on European anarchism and socialism. Be sure to visit the International Watch Museum in La Chaux-de-Fonds for an insightful experience. Wine enthusiasts should also make the trip into the French Jura to sample vin jaune, a pale yellow wine that matures for decades and offers a distinct taste.
