Croatia captures a unique holiday magic during the Advent season, showcasing diverse celebrations across the country, with particularly enchanting events in Zagreb and Rijeka.
Advent in Zagreb
This year, Advent in Zagreb officially begins on December 2 with the lighting of the first Advent candle, continuing the festive spirit until January 7. Themed as a kaleidoscope, the season features a variety of activities, events, and cultural experiences. A walk through the city center reveals an array of Christmas trees, nutcrackers, nativity scenes, and other festive symbols, creating an inviting Advent atmosphere. Zagreb transforms into a vibrant hub of holiday cheer, bringing the season’s joy to life.
Throughout Advent, Zagreb hosts 11 festivals and more than 100 concerts, covering genres from jazz and funk to rock and pop, along with some surprise DJ performances. The city’s beautiful parks, Zrinjevac and Ribnjak, will host numerous exciting events, while the Ice Park on King Tomislav Square invites skating enthusiasts once again this year. A new initiative, Vau Meow, caters to pet-friendly visitors by introducing special Advent activities for pets. Additionally, Junior Advent offers engaging shows designed for the city’s youngest residents, igniting their imagination and fostering a belief in Christmas magic.
Advent in Rijeka
Rijeka’s Christmas and New Year fair is a cherished December tradition that brings together local flavors and festive cheer throughout the city and its surroundings. Wooden stalls line the promenade and nearby areas, offering an array of goods, from food and drinks to souvenirs, decorations, and warm clothing. Missing out on the traditional humanitarian breakfast on Christmas Eve would be a missed opportunity. The city serves delicious cod goulash, fried squid, and other fish delicacies, accompanied by essential fritters, thanks to the efforts of local entrepreneurs.
Running from December 2, 2023, to January 7, 2024, Advent in Rijeka transforms the city with a full schedule of events and exceptional culinary offerings. Highlights include the holiday fair, Advent at Kobler, Rijeka Gastro Advent, Advent on Gradina, and Adventing by the Theater. Advent on Gradina, held at Trsat Castle, remains a beloved local tradition. This year, the castle will sparkle with kilometers of lights and unique decorations, creating a magical Christmas atmosphere. Handcrafted light sculptures, such as the Trsat dragon and the shimmering Roman Tower, add a whimsical touch.
