The Istrian peninsula in Croatia is home to a wealth of charming towns nestled among lush valleys and vineyards, each with its own unique narrative and perfect for day trips. One such town is Grožnjan, renowned as the city of artists and music.
Perched on a 230-meter-high hill in the scenic Mirna Valley, Grožnjan is a romantic and artistic community with a population of just 164. It is conveniently located about 25-30 minutes from the larger coastal towns of Umag, Novigrad, and Poreč.
According to one of Croatia’s most beloved legends, giants inhabited Istria long before humans, crafting the small towns that endure today. These giants were said to be so enormous that they used giant tools to shape the hills, leading to the creation of Grožnjan. The largest giant, named Dragonja, is believed to have plowed a furrow from Ćićarija to the sea, which is now the path of the Mirna River. Locals claim that Dragonja’s son, Gorazd, still resides in the Istrian forests.
Grožnjan’s history dates back to the Middle Ages, with its first mention in 1102 when it was owned by the patriarchs of Aquileia. In 1358, the Venetian Republic took control and transformed it into a military stronghold. However, as Venetian power waned, the town fell into obscurity. Visitors should explore the old houses and structures that reflect its rich history, including the Spinotti-Morteani Palace, once the residence of notaries and landowners, and the castle, which now serves as a concert hall and the heart of the International Cultural Center for Croatian Music Youth.
The town experienced an artistic revival in 1965 when artists from around the globe began settling in its vacant stone houses. Grožnjan evolved into a haven for musicians, painters, actors, and art enthusiasts alike. Today, it boasts 28 studios and an art gallery showcasing works by international artists.

From May through October, the Musical Cultural Summer fills the streets with an array of sounds, from classical to jazz, with the melodies of guitars, pianos, violins, and cellos echoing through its winding lanes. Attending the Jazz is Back event on a warm summer evening is a truly memorable experience. Additionally, the renowned Imaginary Film Academy hosts its summer film school here, much to the delight of drama enthusiasts.
